Proper storage of screens after use is crucial for maintaining their quality and extending their lifespan. Here’s a guide to storing screens after screen printing:
1. Thoroughly Clean the Screen
- Remove all ink residue from the screen with an appropriate screen cleaner, ensuring both sides of the screen are clean. For emulsion-coated screens, use a degreaser to remove any remaining ink or contaminants.
- If you plan to reclaim the screen (remove the emulsion to create a new stencil), do so before storage. If you’re keeping the stencil for future use, make sure it’s fully clean and dry.
2. Allow Screens to Dry Completely
- Let the screens dry completely after cleaning. Moisture can lead to mold or damage to the emulsion, especially if the screen will be stored for an extended period.
3. Store Screens Vertically
- Place screens in a vertical, upright position to prevent warping. Use a screen rack or shelving system designed to keep screens separated and avoid contact with each other.
- If you stack screens horizontally, separate them with cardboard or foam padding to prevent damage to the mesh and emulsion.
4. Store in a Cool, Dry Area
- Avoid exposing screens to direct sunlight, heat, or humidity, as these can cause the emulsion to break down and the mesh to degrade.
- A climate-controlled room or a storage area with stable temperatures and low humidity is ideal.
5. Protect the Screens from Dust and Debris
- Cover screens with plastic wrap, screen bags, or sheets to keep dust and dirt from settling on the mesh. Dust can contaminate the stencil and affect future prints.
6. Label the Screens for Future Use
- If you plan to reuse a screen with the same stencil, label it with the design name and date for easy identification. This is especially helpful if you have a large inventory of screens.
7. Reclaim Screens That Are No Longer in Use
- If you don’t plan to use the design again, reclaim the screen by removing the emulsion, cleaning the mesh, and storing it as a blank screen for future use.
By following these steps, you can keep your screens in good condition and ready for the next printing session!
