Taping off the screen is an important step in screen printing to prevent ink from seeping through unwanted areas. Here’s a guide on how to tape off a screen before printing:
1. Choose the Right Tape
- Screen Tape: Use tape specifically designed for screen printing, such as screen blockout tape or low-tack painter’s tape. These tapes adhere well to the screen without leaving residue and can withstand the ink and cleaning chemicals used in printing.
- Avoid High-Tack Tapes: Avoid high-tack or strong adhesive tapes, as these can damage the mesh when removed.
2. Identify the Edges of the Stencil
- Place the screen on a flat surface with the stencil side up. Identify where the open mesh areas end and where you don’t want any ink to pass through.
3. Tape Around the Edges of the Image Area
- Apply tape around the edges of your stencil, covering any open mesh that could potentially let ink seep through. Start at one side and work your way around the image.
- Press Firmly: Press down on the tape as you apply it, making sure it adheres smoothly to prevent any ink from getting under it.
4. Tape Over Any Pinholes or Gaps
- Look closely at the screen under good lighting. Small pinholes or imperfections in the emulsion can lead to unwanted ink spots on your print. Use small pieces of tape or screen filler to cover these spots.
5. Tape the Inside and Outside of the Screen (Optional)
- For extra protection, you can tape the inside edges of the screen (the side facing down toward the garment) as well. This double layer helps prevent ink from getting onto the substrate if the tape lifts slightly during printing.
Once the screen is fully taped, double-check for any missed areas or pinholes, and you’re ready to start printing!
